Welcome to the SMCT Smartphone Video Training Series, presented by Tap Edit Go in partnership with Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust. This program equips SMCT staff with practical skills to share stories, showcase memorial parks, and support community engagement—using only your smartphone.
Course Overview:
Led by experienced filmmaker Wes Alan, this series covers everything from planning and filming to editing and sharing impactful videos. Each workshop features real-life SMCT examples and is tailored to help you confidently produce high-quality video content that aligns with SMCT’s values and goals.

- Planning: Discover how to identify your audience, craft your story, and plan your message for the greatest impact.
- Filming: Master composition, lighting, sound, and creative camera techniques—all with your phone.
- Editing: Learn step-by-step editing workflows to turn your footage into polished, professional videos.

All sessions are presented live, with full recordings available on this private training platform for you to revisit at any time. All you need to participate is your smartphone—no extra equipment required.

Part1 - PlanningWes teaches the SMCT team the foundations of effective video planning. Watch as he guides participants through identifying their audience, setting clear goals, and using the “Five Key Questions” to shape their video stories. Includes real workshop exercises, group discussions, and practical tips to help you plan videos that connect and engage.

Part2 - Filming
Join Wes and the SMCT team as they dive into hands-on smartphone filming. In this workshop session, Wes demonstrates how to use different camera angles, master lighting, improve audio, and get creative with movement. The team practices “get high, get low, get close,” experiments with tripods and accessories, and learns how to capture more dynamic, professional footage.

Part3 - Editing
Wes walks the SMCT team through the step-by-step process of editing their own videos on a mobile device. This session covers importing footage, cutting and rearranging clips, adding music and text, and using overlays for better storytelling. Follow along as the team edits their first project and Wes shares practical tips for making your edits fast and effective.

Part4 - Advanced Editing
See the SMCT team’s hard work pay off as Wes leads a group review and feedback session on their finished videos. Watch as teams present their projects, get live coaching, and learn advanced editing tricks to improve pacing, style, and storytelling. The session wraps up with collaborative learning, creative challenges, and celebration of everyone’s progress.
